Why “Adopt Don’t Shop” Doesn’t Sit Right With Me - Mieka
Stacey PITHERSI absolutely love animals and I think adoption is a beautiful, life-changing choice. Shelters are full of incredible pets who deserve a second chance, and I’ll always support anyone who opens their home to a rescue. But the slogan “Adopt Don’t Shop” has never sat quite right with me.
Here’s why:
It feels too black and white. The phrase suggests that there’s only one “right” way to bring a pet into your life, and that buying from a breeder is automatically wrong. But in reality, the situation is far more nuanced. Many responsible, ethical breeders put a huge amount of care into their animals, health testing, and lifelong support for owners. For some families, choosing a specific breed that fits their lifestyle and needs is the best option - and that doesn’t make them bad pet parents.
To me, the focus shouldn’t be on shaming people into a single path, but on promoting responsible choices. Whether you adopt from a shelter or buy from a breeder, what matters most is the same: providing a safe, loving, forever home where an animal can thrive.
Instead of “adopt don’t shop,” maybe the message should be:
-
Adopt if you can - there are so many wonderful animals waiting.
-
Shop responsibly if you choose - supporting breeders who put animal welfare first.
At the end of the day, it’s not where your pet comes from that defines you, but how you love and care for them once they’re part of your family.
